Mobile vs. Shop: Which Repair Service Fits Your Needs?
June 10, 2026The first warm Saturday brings everyone to the ramp at once, and half of them find out in the channel that something did not survive the winter. An afternoon of checks in the driveway saves you that tow.
Fuel first
Gas that sat since November is the most common reason an engine will not run right in April. Ethanol blends pull water out of the air, and a half empty tank gives them room to do it. Pull a sample from the water separator and look at it in sunlight. Cloudy fuel or a layer at the bottom means you deal with the tank before you touch anything else.
Change the separator element. Squeeze the primer bulb and watch for cracks and soft spots, because a bulb that will not hold pressure strands you at idle. Check the tank vent for mud daubers, which build in vents through the winter and starve the engine under load.
The cooling system, and what salt does to it
Run the engine on muffs and put your hand in the telltale stream. A weak or warm stream points at the impeller, and a rubber impeller that sat compressed for five months takes a set. Most manufacturers want that impeller on a schedule whether or not it has failed.
Salt water leaves scale inside the passages, and scale builds until the engine runs hot at cruise while telltale flow looks fine at the dock. Supreme Outboard Service publishes descaling at $300, or $225 when you book it with a scheduled 300 hour service. If your engine has spent years in the sound without a descale, it is worth asking about.
Look at the lower unit
Drain the gearcase oil into a clear container. Clean oil comes out the color it went in. Milky or gray oil means water is getting past a seal, and running it that way turns a seal job into a gearcase rebuild. Grit or metal flakes on the drain plug magnet mean you stop and call someone.
Bogue Sound and the back side of the banks hide oyster rock and sandbars that move. Check the prop for dings, a bent blade or fishing line wrapped behind the hub. Line cuts through the prop shaft seal, which lets water into the gearcase without you ever hitting anything.
Anodes, batteries and the rest
- Replace anodes once they lose about half their material. Aluminum anodes suit the brackish water in the sounds better than zinc.
- Load test the batteries rather than reading voltage. A battery can show 12.6 volts and still fail to crank a cold engine.
- Work the steering and the tilt and trim through full travel, looking for weeping seals and stiff spots.
- Grease the fittings, check the belts on four strokes, and look for chafe where wiring passes through the splashwell.
- Refresh the safety gear: flares in date, a working horn, life jackets that fit whoever is aboard this year, and a registration that has not lapsed.
Book the shop before the rush
Yards and mobile mechanics on the Crystal Coast fill up as soon as the weather turns, and the shop that fits you in on Thursday in March is booked three weeks out by May. If your engine is due for a scheduled service, get it on the calendar early.
Supreme Outboard Service publishes its 2026 Yamaha packages, which run $400 for a 20 hour service on an F150 to F200 and $1,025 for a 200 hour on the larger 4.2 liter blocks, plus tax. Nick’s Boat Service has advertised 20% off maintenance without listing an end date, so ask whether it still stands. Treat both as a starting point and confirm what the job includes for your engine.
When to hand it over
Do the fuel, the anodes, the batteries and the visual checks yourself. Hand over anything involving milky gearcase oil, a hot running engine, a fault code you cannot clear, or fuel that has turned. Those jobs cost less to fix in a driveway in March than in the channel in July.
